::I visited this place in 1994 on a small tour by car around the Harz. At that time East Germany was just reunited with West Germany, and crossing from West into East was still like going back by time machine to the 1950s: cobblestone roads, no asphalt, and many places were as I remember from visits to Germany in childhood. We passed on our road through a small village with a delapidated - it looked to me like an old abbey, but there were no clear indications what it was. There was nothing there, some sandy place to park and lots of bush growth. One couldn't enter the building as it was barred up. It struck me somehow as a special place and I was charmed by the appearance. This was St Vitus in Drubeck at that time. . A decade later we passed through the same place, and it had totally transformed: there was now asphalt, a visitor centre, a big parking lot and the abbey was totally restored. Actually, in hindsight I am still not sure which of the two experiences of this place I liked better.
