  Ironically, the "Monument to the Unknown Deserter", which the sculptor Mehmet Aksoy created as a contractor in 1989, was faced with, as it were, serious obstacles that a deserter who acts for honorable reasons can encounter in various ways. Bonn was originally planned as the exhibition location, but this failed due to politically motivated vehemence. This contact facility was not available in Potsdam after the Wall came down in 1990, although the reappraisal of history, which could be much more sensitive due to some tragic events on the wall. An inscription, which Kurt Tucholsky wrote as early as 1925 ("The Tables"), fits in perfectly: We are missing other boards We lack this one: "A man lived here who refused to shoot at others. Honor his memory! " The sculpture, which is probably perceived by many as a purely political statement, has a much more specific statement, namely that of humanity. I find it artistically a very successful work. The figure is schematic, referable to all previous or following people who only have this way out. It is a roughly worked white marble block, the edges and shapes of which symbolize the fractures to which such fate is inevitably subject. It is also aesthetically vivid to blend in with its green surroundings in a modern style.
