Absolute mess of a station Messe/Deutz is. Escalators are out of order for months, which makes climbing stairs a nightmare for people with disabilities. Confusing layout which got worsened by constant closing of tracks. Slow repairs. Unattended homeless people everywhere. Trains are late occasionally, and get cancelled without adequate prior notice. For anyone who is visiting Cologne for Messe events, this station is a terrible first impression.

Köln Messe/Deutz station is an important railway junction for long-distance rail and local services in the Cologne district of Deutz in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is situated close to the eastern bank of the Rhine and connected via the Hohenzollern Bridge to Köln Hauptbahnhof, the city's main station, which is just a few hundred metres away. The Cologne Trade Fair (Koelnmesse) grounds are directly north of the station, hence the Messe in the station's name.

This station has no escalators end no elevators. For older people, disabled people or you are on your way with a perambulator, this station is a disaster. As the Germans call it "its the last station" (daß letzte Bahnhof). For healthy people, it's a nice station.

Whilst agreeing with the steps, the gentleman at information dealt calmly and efficiently with us and put us straight into a taxi to Brussels (2 hours away) when he saw our paperwork detailing a 13 hour trip from Salzburg that had been a complete disaster. He didn't speak English but our German and the mountain of paper was enough! Well done that man!
